गौतम बुद्ध का जन्म एक राजकुमार के रूप में हुआ था और उनका नाम सिद्धार्थ गौतम था। 25 वर्ष की आयु तक उन्हें दुनिया के दुखों से दूर रखा गया। एक दिन शिकार पर जाते समय उन्होंने एक बीमार आदमी, एक बूढ़ा आदमी, एक अंतिम संस्कार का जुलूस और एक भीख मांगते हुए भिक्षु (monk) को देखा। इन दृश्यों ने उन्हें इतना विचलित कर दिया कि उन्होंने ज्ञान (enlightenment) की खोज में राजमहल छोड़ दिया। सात साल भटकने के बाद, उन्हें एक पीपल के पेड़ (बोधिवृक्ष) के नीचे ज्ञान प्राप्त हुआ और वे 'बुद्ध' (The Awakened One) कहलाए।

उन्होंने अपना पहला उपदेश बनारस में दिया, जहाँ उन्होंने किसा गौतमी (Kisa Gotami) नाम की एक महिला की कहानी के माध्यम से दुनिया को एक महान संदेश दिया। किसा गौतमी का इकलौता बेटा मर गया था। दुख में पागल होकर वह अपने मरे हुए बेटे को जीवित करने के लिए दवा मांग रही थी। एक व्यक्ति ने उसे बुद्ध के पास भेजा।

बुद्ध ने उससे कहा कि वे उसके बेटे को ठीक कर देंगे, लेकिन इसके लिए उसे एक ऐसे घर से एक मुट्ठी सरसों के बीज (mustard seeds) लाने होंगे, जहाँ आज तक किसी की मृत्यु न हुई हो। किसा गौतमी हर घर गई, उसे बीज तो मिल गए, लेकिन ऐसा कोई घर नहीं मिला जहाँ किसी प्रियजन (माता, पिता, बेटा, या दोस्त) की मृत्यु न हुई हो। शाम तक वह थक हारकर सड़क के किनारे बैठ गई और उसने शहर की रोशनी को जलते और बुझते देखा। तब उसे एहसास हुआ कि इंसानों का जीवन भी ऐसा ही है—यह जलता है और फिर बुझ जाता है। उसने महसूस किया कि मृत्यु सभी के लिए सामान्य (common to all) है और वह अपने दुख में स्वार्थी (selfish) हो गई थी।

बुद्ध का उपदेश यही था कि दुनिया दुख और मृत्यु से पीड़ित है। रोने और शोक मनाने से कोई शांति नहीं मिलती, बल्कि शरीर और बीमार हो जाता है। जो व्यक्ति दुख पर विजय प्राप्त कर लेता है, वही सच्ची शांति (peace of mind) पा सकता है।
