Clause एक ऐसा समूह है जिसमें Subject और Predicate (क्रिया) दोनों होते हैं, परंतु यह अकेले पूर्ण अर्थ नहीं देता। दूसरे शब्दों में, Clause एक वाक्य का ऐसा भाग है जो अपने भीतर एक छोटा वाक्य जैसा होता है। उदाहरण के लिए I know that he is honest में दो Clauses हैं — I know (Main Clause) तथा that he is honest (Subordinate Clause)। Class 10 की परीक्षा में Clauses का ज्ञान Combined Sentences, Transformation of Sentences और Sentence Analysis के प्रश्नों के लिए आवश्यक है।
Clause और Phrase में अंतर समझना सबसे पहला कदम है। Phrase में Subject और Verb दोनों नहीं होते, जैसे in the garden, on the table। जबकि Clause में दोनों होते हैं, जैसे when the rain started। Phrase वाक्य का केवल एक भाग होता है, जबकि Clause के अपने Subject-Verb का संबंध होता है। यह भेद परीक्षा में अक्सर पूछा जाता है।
Clauses तीन मुख्य प्रकार के होते हैं — Noun Clause, Adjective Clause और Adverb Clause। इनका वर्गीकरण इस आधार पर होता है कि वे वाक्य में किस शब्द (Noun, Adjective या Adverb) का काम कर रहे हैं। प्रत्येक Clause अपने Conjunctions (जैसे that, who, which, because, when, if) से शुरू होता है।
यह अक्सर that, what, when, where, why, how, whether, if से शुरू होता है।
Noun Clause की पहचान यह है कि इसे किसी एक Noun द्वारा बदला जा सकता है। I know that he is honest को I know his honesty से बदला जा सकता है। परीक्षा में Noun Clause अक्सर Reported Speech और Simple-Complex Transformation से जुड़ा होता है।
Adjective Clause किसी Noun या Pronoun का वर्णन करता है और Adjective की तरह काम करता है। यह Relative Pronouns — who, which, that, whose, whom, where, when — से शुरू होता है। इसे Relative Clause भी कहते हैं।
Adjective Clause हमेशा उस Noun के तुरंत बाद आता है जिसका वह वर्णन करता है। Restrictive Adjective Clause आवश्यक जानकारी देती है, जबकि Non-restrictive Clause अतिरिक्त जानकारी देती है और Commas में रहती है। My brother, who lives in Mumbai, is an engineer. (Non-restrictive)।
Adverb Clause मुख्य क्रिया की विशेषता बताता है और Adverb की तरह काम करता है। यह Conjunctions — because, since, as, if, unless, although, though, when, while, before, after, so that, in order that — से शुरू होता है। यह कारण, समय, शर्त, उद्देश्य, विपरीतता, परिणाम आदि व्यक्त करता है।
| प्रकार | Conjunctions | उदाहरण |
|---|---|---|
| Time | when, while, before, after | After the rain stopped, we left. |
| Place | where, wherever | Stay where you are. |
| Reason | because, since, as | He failed because he was lazy. |
| Condition | if, unless | You will fail unless you study. |
| Purpose | so that, in order that | He ran fast so that he could catch the bus. |
| Result | so...that | He is so weak that he cannot walk. |
| Concession | although, though | Though it rained, we played. |
| Manner | as, as if | She spoke as if she knew everything. |
Clause की पहचान के लिए निम्नलिखित कदम उठाएँ:
The teacher said that the students who were absent should submit their work. — यहाँ said (Main), that the students should submit (Noun Clause), who were absent (Adjective Clause)।
| बिंदु | Clause | Phrase |
|---|---|---|
| Subject | होता है | नहीं होता |
| Verb | होती है | नहीं होती |
| उदाहरण | when it rained | in the morning |
| अर्थ | अधूरा/पूरा | अधूरा |
| प्रकार | काम | शुरुआती शब्द |
|---|---|---|
| Noun Clause | Noun का काम | that, what, when, why, whether |
| Adjective Clause | Adjective का काम | who, which, that, whose |
| Adverb Clause | Adverb का काम | because, if, when, although, so that |
| प्रकार | Conjunctions |
|---|---|
| Time | when, while, before, after, until |
| Reason | because, since, as |
| Condition | if, unless, provided that |
| Purpose | so that, in order that |
| Result | so...that, such...that |
| Concession | although, though, even though |
