1. Clauses (उपवाक्य) - विस्तृत परिचय

Clause एक ऐसा समूह है जिसमें Subject और Predicate (क्रिया) दोनों होते हैं, परंतु यह अकेले पूर्ण अर्थ नहीं देता। दूसरे शब्दों में, Clause एक वाक्य का ऐसा भाग है जो अपने भीतर एक छोटा वाक्य जैसा होता है। उदाहरण के लिए I know that he is honest में दो Clauses हैं — I know (Main Clause) तथा that he is honest (Subordinate Clause)। Class 10 की परीक्षा में Clauses का ज्ञान Combined Sentences, Transformation of Sentences और Sentence Analysis के प्रश्नों के लिए आवश्यक है।

Clause और Phrase में अंतर समझना सबसे पहला कदम है। Phrase में Subject और Verb दोनों नहीं होते, जैसे in the garden, on the table। जबकि Clause में दोनों होते हैं, जैसे when the rain started। Phrase वाक्य का केवल एक भाग होता है, जबकि Clause के अपने Subject-Verb का संबंध होता है। यह भेद परीक्षा में अक्सर पूछा जाता है।

Clauses तीन मुख्य प्रकार के होते हैं — Noun Clause, Adjective Clause और Adverb Clause। इनका वर्गीकरण इस आधार पर होता है कि वे वाक्य में किस शब्द (Noun, Adjective या Adverb) का काम कर रहे हैं। प्रत्येक Clause अपने Conjunctions (जैसे that, who, which, because, when, if) से शुरू होता है। इस अध्याय में हम तीनों प्रकार के Subordinate Clauses की पहचान और उनके प्रयोग का विस्तार से अध्ययन करेंगे।

2. Main Clause और Subordinate Clause

Main Clause (मुख्य उपवाक्य) स्वतंत्र रूप से पूर्ण अर्थ देता है, इसलिए इसे Independent Clause भी कहते हैं। Subordinate Clause (अधीन उपवाक्य) अकेला अधूरा अर्थ देता है और Main Clause पर निर्भर करता है, इसलिए इसे Dependent Clause भी कहते हैं। Subordinate Clause हमेशा किसी Conjunction से शुरू होता है।

3. Noun Clause (संज्ञा उपवाक्य)

Noun Clause वाक्य में Subject, Object या Complement की तरह काम करता है। यह अक्सर that, what, when, where, why, how, whether, if से शुरू होता है।

Noun Clause की पहचान यह है कि इसे किसी एक Noun द्वारा बदला जा सकता है। I know that he is honest को I know his honesty से बदला जा सकता है। परीक्षा में Noun Clause अक्सर Reported Speech और Simple-Complex Transformation से जुड़ा होता है।

4. Adjective Clause (विशेषण उपवाक्य)

Adjective Clause किसी Noun या Pronoun का वर्णन करता है और Adjective की तरह काम करता है। यह Relative Pronouns — who, which, that, whose, whom, where, when — से शुरू होता है। इसे Relative Clause भी कहते हैं।

Adjective Clause हमेशा उस Noun के तुरंत बाद आता है जिसका वह वर्णन करता है। Restrictive Adjective Clause आवश्यक जानकारी देती है, जबकि Non-restrictive Clause अतिरिक्त जानकारी देती है और Commas में रहती है। My brother, who lives in Mumbai, is an engineer. (Non-restrictive)।

5. Adverb Clause (क्रियाविशेषण उपवाक्य)

Adverb Clause मुख्य क्रिया की विशेषता बताता है और Adverb की तरह काम करता है। यह Conjunctions — because, since, as, if, unless, although, though, when, while, before, after, so that, in order that — से शुरू होता है। यह कारण, समय, शर्त, उद्देश्य, विपरीतता, परिणाम आदि व्यक्त करता है।

(i) Adverb Clauses के प्रकारों की विस्तृत सूची

प्रकार Conjunctions उदाहरण
Time when, while, before, after After the rain stopped, we left.
Place where, wherever Stay where you are.
Reason because, since, as He failed because he was lazy.
Condition if, unless You will fail unless you study.
Purpose so that, in order that He ran fast so that he could catch the bus.
Result so...that He is so weak that he cannot walk.
Concession although, though Though it rained, we played.
Manner as, as if She spoke as if she knew everything.

6. Clause की पहचान (Identification of Clauses)

Clause की पहचान के लिए निम्नलिखित कदम उठाएँ:

  1. वाक्य में सभी Verbs को पहचानें — हर Verb अपने साथ एक Clause लाता है।
  2. प्रत्येक Verb का अपना Subject खोजें।
  3. जो Clause स्वतंत्र अर्थ दे, वह Main Clause है; बाकी Subordinate हैं।
  4. Subordinate Clause के पहले आया Conjunction देखकर उसका प्रकार तय करें।

The teacher said that the students who were absent should submit their work. — यहाँ said (Main), that the students should submit (Noun Clause), who were absent (Adjective Clause)।

7. त्वरित पुनरावृत्ति तालिकाएँ

तालिका 1: Clause और Phrase का अंतर

बिंदु Clause Phrase
Subject होता है नहीं होता
Verb होती है नहीं होती
उदाहरण when it rained in the morning
अर्थ अधूरा/पूरा अधूरा

तालिका 2: Subordinate Clauses के प्रकार

प्रकार काम शुरुआती शब्द
Noun Clause Noun का काम that, what, when, why, whether
Adjective Clause Adjective का काम who, which, that, whose
Adverb Clause Adverb का काम because, if, when, although, so that

तालिका 3: Adverb Clause के प्रकार और Conjunctions

प्रकार Conjunctions
Time when, while, before, after, until
Reason because, since, as
Condition if, unless, provided that
Purpose so that, in order that
Result so...that, such...that
Concession although, though, even though

9. महत्वपूर्ण आरेख (SVG)

आरेख 1: Clauses के प्रकारों का वर्गीकरण

Clauses का वर्गीकरण CLAUSES उपवाक्य Main / Independent स्वतंत्र पूर्ण अर्थ Subordinate Dependent, अधीन Noun Clause that, what, why Adjective Clause who, which, that Adverb Clause because, if, when Golden Rule (स्वर्ण नियम) Main Clause पूर्ण अर्थ देता है; Subordinate Clause Conjunction से शुरू होकर उसी पर निर्भर रहता है।

आरेख 2: वाक्य में Clause की पहचान

Clause पहचानने की विधि सभी Verbs पहचानें हर Verb का Subject खोजें क्या अकेले पूर्ण अर्थ देता है? हाँ = Main Clause Independent नहीं = Subordinate Conjunction से शुरू Golden Rule (स्वर्ण नियम) जितनी Verbs, उतने Clauses; जो Conjunction (that, who, because) से शुरू हो, वही Subordinate है।

10. सामान्य गलतियाँ

  1. Phrase को Clause समझना: in the garden में Subject-Verb नहीं है, इसलिए यह Phrase है, Clause नहीं।
  2. Relative Pronoun का गलत चयन: व्यक्ति के लिए who तथा वस्तु के लिए which का प्रयोग होता है। the book who गलत है, सही है the book which/that।
  3. Adverb Clause में so that और so...that का भ्रम: Purpose के लिए so that और Result के लिए so...that। He ran fast so that he could catch (Purpose) बनाम He is so weak that he cannot walk (Result)।
  4. Condition में unless के साथ not लगाना: Unless का अर्थ ही if not है, इसलिए unless he does not come गलत है, सही है unless he comes।
  5. Adjective Clause में Comma गलत लगाना: Restrictive Clause के साथ Comma नहीं लगता।
  6. Noun Clause की पहचान में गलती: Noun Clause को Noun से बदलकर जाँचें; अगर बदल सकते हैं तो वह Noun Clause है।

11. परीक्षा युक्तियाँ

  1. Combined Sentences बनाते समय पहचानें कि कौन-सा वाक्य Main रहेगा और कौन-सा Clause बनेगा।
  2. Relative Pronouns की सूची (who, which, that, whose, whom) Adjective Clause की पहचान के लिए याद रखें।
  3. Adverb Clause के Conjunctions (because, if, although, when, so that) Noun Clause के (that, what, why) से भिन्न होते हैं।
