उदाहरण के लिए — Direct: He said, "I am busy." तथा Indirect: He said that he was busy.
Present Simple बनता है Past Simple, Present Continuous बनता है Past Continuous, Present Perfect बनता है Past Perfect, तथा Will बनता है Would। परंतु यदि Reporting Verb Present या Future Tense में हो, तो Reported Speech का Tense नहीं बदलता। इस अध्याय में हम इन सभी नियमों को विस्तार से समझेंगे।
Assertive (कथनात्मक) वाक्य में Reporting Verb said या said to का प्रयोग होता है। Indirect Speech में said to के स्थान पर told और said के स्थान पर said का प्रयोग होता है, तथा Conjunction that जोड़ा जाता है। Pronouns का बदलाव कर्ता और संबंध के अनुसार होता है — पहले व्यक्ति का Pronoun Reporting Verb के Subject के अनुसार, दूसरे व्यक्ति का Object के अनुसार और तीसरे व्यक्ति का वैसा ही रहता है।
उदाहरण: - Direct: He said, "I am ill." → Indirect: He said that he was ill. - Direct: She said to me, "I have finished my work." → Indirect: She told me that she had finished her work. - Direct: They said, "We are going to Delhi." → Indirect: They said that they were going to Delhi. - Direct: He said, "I will help you." → Indirect: He said that he would help me.
यदि Reported Speech कोई सार्वभौमिक सत्य, आदत या ऐतिहासिक तथ्य व्यक्त करता है, तो Tense बदलना आवश्यक नहीं है। The teacher said, "The sun rises in the east." → The teacher said that the sun rises in the east. He said, "Honesty is the best policy." → He said that honesty is the best policy.
Interrogative (प्रश्नवाचक) वाक्यों में Reporting Verb ask, asked, enquired, enquire of होती है। Conjunction that नहीं लगता। Yes/No प्रश्नों में if या whether का प्रयोग होता है, जबकि WH-Questions (what, when, where, why, how) में वही WH-शब्द ही Conjunction का काम करता है। प्रश्नवाचक क्रम हटाकर वाक्य को कथनात्मक क्रम (Subject + Verb) में बदला जाता है।
उदाहरण: - Direct: He asked me, "Where do you live?" → Indirect: He asked me where I lived. - Direct: She said to me, "Are you going to the market?" → Indirect: She asked me if I was going to the market. - Direct: They asked, "Why did you come late?" → Indirect: They asked why I had come late. - Direct: Father said to son, "Have you done your homework?" → Indirect: Father asked his son whether he had done his homework.
Imperative (आज्ञासूचक) वाक्यों में आदेश, निषेध, अनुरोध या सलाह होती है। Reporting Verb को आदेश के लिए ordered/commanded, अनुरोध के लिए requested/begged, सलाह के लिए advised और निषेध के लिए forbade में बदला जाता है। Conjunction that की जगह to का प्रयोग होता है और Verb अपनी First Form में आती है। Negative Imperative में to not या not to का प्रयोग होता है।
उदाहरण: - Direct: The teacher said to the boy, "Sit down." → Indirect: The teacher ordered the boy to sit down. - Direct: He said to me, "Please help me." → Indirect: He requested me to help him. - Direct: Mother said to her son, "Don't go out in the rain." → Indirect: Mother forbade her son to go out in the rain. (या told her son not to go out) - Direct: The doctor said to me, "Take this medicine twice a day." → Indirect: The doctor advised me to take that medicine twice a day.
Exclamatory (विस्मयादिबोधक) वाक्यों में हर्ष, आश्चर्य, दुःख, विस्मय आदि व्यक्त होते हैं, जिन्हें What, How, Alas, Hurrah, Oh से शुरू होने वाले वाक्यों से दर्शाया जाता है। इनमें Reporting Verb exclaimed जैसी क्रिया में बदलती है, साथ ही भाव के अनुसार with joy, with sorrow, in wonder जैसी Phrases जुड़ती हैं। Conjunction that लगाया जाता है और Exclamatory Word हटा दिया जाता है।
उदाहरण: - Direct: He said, "Hurrah! I have won the match." → Indirect: He exclaimed with joy that he had won the match. - Direct: She said, "Alas! I have lost my purse." → Indirect: She exclaimed with sorrow that she had lost her purse. - Direct: He said, "What a beautiful garden it is!" → Indirect: He exclaimed in wonder that it was a very beautiful garden. - Direct: The old man said, "Oh! I am so tired." → Indirect: The old man exclaimed with sorrow that he was very tired.
